Main Types of Steel Galvanizing:
Cold galvanizing by painting
Thermal-spray zinc coating
Electrogalvanizing
Thermal-diffusion galvanizing
  • Hot-dip galvanizing
The primary purpose of galvanizing is to create an impermeable coating that protects the base metal from irreversible corrosion.

Zinc is especially effective for protecting steel. In air it forms a stable, impermeable film of zinc oxide and zinc carbonate, unlike porous rust. Zinc also has a lower electrochemical potential than iron, so in the presence of moisture it acts as a sacrificial anode and protects the steel surface.
